So, after far too many late nights of\u00a0obsessive\u00a0compulsive\u00a0work on my laptop (i’m sure this is how i started the music blog!)\u00a0\u00a0i have a first design for the main character Stina. I’ve uploaded a render test of the close up character model. It’s been\u00a0done\u00a0in the 3d animation package XSI using\u00a0some\u00a0subsurface\u00a0shaders\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0skin and eyes and my own custom setup for\u00a0the\u00a0facial animation system (check out youtube.com\/filopastries for more examples of this system)<\/p>\n
This is the result of many design iterations. She went\u00a0through hundreds of\u00a0different\u00a0age\/shape\/colouring\u00a0variations. I suspect she \u00a0may continue to\u00a0evolve,\u00a0but i’m happy with her look, at\u00a0least\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0moment and\u00a0the\u00a0underlying\u00a0animation\u00a0system seems pretty robust. She needs to be able to switch from looking young to old and also be able to pull of pretty and ugly so it’s been quite a\u00a0challenge\u00a0to say the least! The next stage is to do\u00a0some\u00a0animation performance test to see how well she can pull off some of\u00a0these\u00a0characteristics (not to mention to see if i have\u00a0the\u00a0chops to nail her performance for\u00a0the\u00a0animation reference; Or\u00a0whether\u00a0its time to seek out a proper actor \/ actress for the task!) .<\/p>\n
I’ve tried to make her look tomboyish and blandly pretty, leaving\u00a0the\u00a0facial expressions to do all the expressive work, but still with a base appeal. \u00a0I toyed with\u00a0the\u00a0idea of making her look ugly, but it just drew attention to the fact and i decided it would\u00a0distract\u00a0from the narrative ideas i want to explore.\u00a0Particularly\u00a0as i want to be able to achieve a high level of aspirational\u00a0romanticism\u00a0for the viewer as well as\u00a0visiting\u00a0the\u00a0darker side. I kept coming back to David Lynch, who i suspect will be a big influence on this film. Having visually attractive characters seems key to his\u00a0ability\u00a0to explore the\u00a0darker\u00a0sides of life and sexuality and clearly helps in\u00a0creating\u00a0real visual contrast with the darker, ugly and shocking\u00a0imagery. \u00a0I still\u00a0haven’t\u00a0settled\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0age range for this film, but i\u00a0think\u00a0it’s going up, as i want to get into\u00a0the\u00a0darker themes that lurk in Angela Carters “The Bloody Chamber” short stories (..mine being a rather poor cousin of the aforementioned!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
